Margot Robbie totally transformers into the world's most infamous figure skater in the first trailer for I, Tonya.

The Suicide Squad star and Avengers: Infinity War's Sebastian Stan are almost completely unrecognisable as they play the couple involved in one of sporting's most notorious scandals. Watch the teaser below:

The darkly comic thriller tells the story of real-life disgraced figure skater Tonya Harding, whose career was decimated when she and boyfriend Jeff Gillooly (Stan) were accused of organising an attack on Tonya's Olympics rival Nancy Kerrigan (The Fosters' Caitlin Carver).

Tonya denied ordering the attack, but was eventually convicted of hindering the prosecution of Gilooly and others allegedly involved in plotting the crime.

This biopic paints a defiant picture of Tonya, as Robbie seethes at one point: "There's no such thing as truth. It's bullshit."

The portrayal appears uncanny, which is surprising since Robbie admittedly had no idea that I,Tonya was based on an actual person and a real scandal when she accepted the role.

"I think I was about four years old when the incident took place," Margot explained. "I was in Australia and totally unaware of the whole incident and the crazy controversy.

"To be honest, when I read the script, I didn't know who Tonya Harding was, and I didn't realize it was a true story. I thought it was entirely fictionalized and our writer Steve was so creative to come up with the quirky characters and absurd incidents."

I,Tonya's producers famously snubbed a multi-million dollar offer from streaming giant Netflix to make sure that the project was seen on the big screen, so let's hope that gamble pays off.

The film releases in the UK on Friday, February 16, 2018 in the UK and December 8, 2017 in the US.
