Hibs will be without Martin Boyle when they take on Rangers next weekend after he had surgery.

The experienced forward has had a troublesome hand for some time now and has been playing with it heavily bandaged up. Despite know it needed surgery, he has been trying to put it off for as long as possible so as to not miss any football but has now admitted defeat, reports the Edinburgh News.

The injury has been causing Boyle "serious discomfort" during games and training and so he finally decided to have the operation. The Hibees will hope to have him back sooner than later but his experience will be a big miss for the trip to Ibrox a week on Sunday.

Boyle was only used as a sub against St Johnstone at the weekend after travelling across the world to play for Australia over the international break, and came on to score a clincher at Easter Road.

Afterwards, he said he was determined to hold onto his place in the team, saying: “I’ve been here a few years, I’m not getting any younger, I’m afraid! But I do like that competition. I like to have people challenging for my place; it gives me a lift.

“I want to keep that jersey, not give it to anyone else. That might be a bit selfish. But if it’s working and we’re getting performances, that’s only a good thing.”

Meanwhile, Joe Newell is expected to be fit to face Gers after sitting out the St Johnstone win with a groin problem. With no game this weekend, that should give the Easter Road captain time to recover.
