Martin Odegaard was reportedly "afraid" of having suffered a major injury after limping off the field for Norway during the international break.

Odegaard went down midway through the second half during Norway's 2-1 win over Austria after being on the receiving end of a challenge from Christoph Baumgartner. Mikel Arteta's side now face being without their captain for several key fixtures over the next few weeks.

The Arsenal star is confirmed as missing Sunday's huge North London derby against Tottenham and a crucial fixture against Manchester City after being spotted boarding a plane to return to his club on Tuesday with the assistance of crutches.

And fresh insight into Odegaard's injury has been provided by Norwegian journalist Joachim Baardsen. He claims that the playmaker's injury is not as serious as first feared after talking to Norway's team doctor.

"We spoke to the team doctor of Norway yesterday and this morning, and he says that Martin Odegaard is unfortunately out for at least three weeks - and if he comes back after three weeks, that will just be a bonus," he told Sky Sports News.

"We saw it during the game when the incident happened, and the team doctor said that Martin was afraid. I think he might have been afraid that this was a really serious injury that might put him on the sideline for many months.

"It seems that it's not a fracture and that's very positive, but you never know how it looks inside the ankle before you have the MRI scans and that's what he is doing in London now."
