Martin Zubimendi has rubbished suggestions that he is regretting turning down a switch to Liverpool during the summer transfer window - suggesting he has no plans to move on in January.

The Reds made the Spain midfielder their primary target in the off-season, with Arne Slot earmarking Zubimendi for a key role in the Liverpool midfield, but he turned his back on a transfer, instead opting to remain with his boyhood club.

A spurious claim by a high-profile, but notoriously unreliable, X user in September said that Zubimendi was already having second thoughts about his decision to stay in Spain.

That claim was then widely recirculated by a number of outlets - British and abroad - but Zubimendi has confirmed that he is happy with the decision he made.

Manchester City is now being linked with a January swoop for Zubimendi following Rodri's season-ending injury, but, appearing to shut down the idea that he could leave Sociedad when the January transfer window opens, Zubimendi said: "You can rest easy in winter.”

“My philosophy is to do what I feel at all times," Zubimendi said of his decision to stay put. "So far, things have gone well for me. It is true that there was a lot of noise. I went through uncomfortable moments. The best thing for me was to stay here and I am happy and at peace. There is a lot of noise because of the press but in the end everything is easier than all that.

"Of course I don't regret it, I can't think that after four or five games at the start of the season. I made my decision from within, I thought it was the best thing to do, the results don't affect me. I see potential in this team, you just have to watch us train and I'm excited about having a good season.

“In the end, like every market, things always come up. This summer it was my turn. These are things that happen that you have to deal with in the best way possible. It is true that I was a bit uncomfortable with everything, especially because of the noise, and in the end I isolated myself and made the decision that I thought was the right one."
