Marvin Lewis: 'I don't think' I'll coach in the NFL again
Marvin Lewis currently finds himself out of NFL coaching for the first time in 27 years, but as of right now he’s not missing it one bit.
Lewis, whose tenure as Cincinnati Bengals head coach ended in January after 16 seasons and seven playoff appearances, was on CBS Sports radio with Zach Gelb recently and was asked whether he’ll coach in the NFL again.
“I don’t think so. I’m fine,” Lewis said.
Does he miss the NFL?
“I do not,” he said.
Lewis certainly isn’t the first coach or player to say they don’t miss the league just a few months removed from retiring, resigning or being fired, so his feelings could always change.
But for now he certainly seems done.
Lewis’ lack of playoff success
The biggest knock on Lewis in Cincinnati is that the team never won a playoff game on his watch. Though Lewis led the Bengals to as many postseason appearances in his 16 years as they’d been to in their first 35 seasons and he’s the winningest coach in franchise history, going one-and-done so many times was frustrating for fans and became a joke in some circles.
“The other team ended up with more points,” Lewis said matter-of-factly.
“You become an NFL coach for one thing, and that's to win the championship - and we were unable to do that,” he said. “That's the unfortunate part. But that locker room is full of great young players. I'm wishing them the best of luck this coming season.”
‘I’d probably spend more time watching golf’
Last month, Lewis was announced as a special advisor to Arizona State head coach Herm Edwards.
Edwards and Lewis have been friends for decades.
Now that he’s “another set of eyes, another set of ears,” for Edwards and the Sun Devils, Lewis doesn’t seem himself as invested in the NFL.
“I watched [NFL] games because it had an affect on things I was doing and so forth and strategically and so forth if I had an opportunity to watch another game, but I'd probably spend more time watching golf on TV than football,” he said. “With my responsibilities here at ASU, I'll probably be a little busy on Sundays.”
