Mason Greenwood has accepted he is unlikely to ever make a return to the Man Utd first team, according to a report.

Greenwood has been suspended by Man Utd since he was arrested on suspicion of rape and other related offences in January 2022. Although the charges against him were dropped in February 2023 due to the withdrawal of witnesses and new material coming to light, Man Utd are still conducting their own internal investigation.

Therefore, it has already been made clear that Greenwood will not be reintegrated at Man Utd this season. And now, the chances of him ever returning to their fold seem to have been played down – by the striker himself.

A source told The Sun: “Mason believes he’s finished at United.

“He’s sat at home kicking his heels and very frustrated.

“He wants to get back playing football but realises his situation is very complicated and it’s his own doing.

“He is determined to play football again but doesn’t think he’ll ever pull on a United shirt ever again.”

And according to the report from the tabloid, Greenwood has told his friends that his Man Utd career is essentially over.

Mason Greenwood might have to move abroad

Greenwood is due to be under contract at Man Utd until 2025. Previously, he scored 35 goals in 129 appearances for the club.

The 21-year-old has already been tipped to pursue a move abroad in order to resurrect his career. A move elsewhere in England appears to be unlikely.

Only time will tell what the solution is for Greenwood, but a departure from Man Utd is now looking most likely.

Some of the clubs to have been tentatively linked with him in recent weeks include AC Milan and Fenerbahce. However, it would seem that nothing is advanced with any potential suitor at this stage.

In terms of his international career, Greenwood has already learned that England will not be calling him up again as long as Gareth Southgate is in charge as manager. Admittedly, he only ever played once for the national team before.

But he is now seeking a return to club football, even if that is with a team other than Man Utd.

Greenwood previously came through the academy ranks at Man Utd and has never represented another club, yet that could be about to change if an agreement can be reached.
