Mason Mount has already told Ruben Amorim how he can fit into Manchester United's new system. The 25-year-old midfielder, who swapped Stamford Bridge for Old Trafford last year in a deal worth £60m, failed to impress under Erik ten Hag, so he'll be hoping to turn over a new leaf.

Mount featured just 25 times for United during the Dutchman's reign, scoring just one goal and providing only one assist. The England international featured in a number of positions, whether it be on the left wing, attacking midfield or in a double pivot, but he struggled to build any momentum.

In a new setup – similar to the one where he enjoyed his best performances for ChelseaMount has already been earmarked as a key member of the squad. After leading his first training session at Carrington, Amorim said: "Mason Mount… I have to tell you I love that kid.

"You can look in his eyes that he wants this so bad. And this is the most important thing for me. I know he was suffering from injuries, he was not on the pitch, but now he’s trying to stay fit and we hope he can continue to be fit, to show all the talent that he’s shown, for example, in Chelsea."

Under Thomas Tuchel, Mount fired the Blues to Champions League glory as an inside forward. In possession, the Cobham graduate enjoyed operating in the half spaces, picking up the ball on the half-turn and linking the midfield with the attack.

Out of possession, he often led the press with his relentless work rate, making him the ultimate team player. Amorim added: "He played in this system [before], so it’s perfect for him. I have two positions for Mason Mount, so he should be very happy!"

Having only played five minutes for United under Amorim, it remains to be seen where Mount will feature. However, it's likely that he'll either partner a second attacking midfielder behind the striker in the 'front three' or operate slightly deeper in a double-pivot.

Speaking to the official Chelsea website in November 2020, Mount claimed he sees himself as a No.10. He said: "I’ve played midfield my whole life. I’ve varied between playing a bit more forward in a No.10 position but I always kind of see myself as a No.8.

"I’ve definitely got a range of longer passing in my locker and you can bring that out more when you’re playing in that deeper No.8 position. I do like that [central] role. It allows me to build up play with the ball and also get forward and join the attack."

Then, two years later, Mount asserted that he's best as a No.8. He said: "I like to think I'm a traditional midfielder even though I can play a number of roles for the team. I've always said that I'm best as a no.8 and I've played there ever since I was a young kid.

"I like to work from box to box, help out defensively but also get forward to score and assist goals for the team. That's where I think my strengths are. I'm versatile, so I can adapt and play higher up or a lot deeper.

"For me, in this day and age certainly, being able to play different positions is so key. You see formations change even during games and you can play two or three different roles in a game."
