Mason Mount exclusive: Chelsea ‘will sell’ Liverpool target on one condition after unexpected developments
Chelsea have been caught by surprise in their attempts to renew the contract of Mason Mount, TEAMtalk has been told, and a summer sale is a possibility.
Mount is into the final 18 months of his contract with Chelsea, where he has become a regular starter after graduating the academy. So far in his Chelsea career, Mount has made 191 appearances, scoring 33 goals and providing 37 assists.
However, Chelsea have come across plenty of frustration in their attempts to extend Mount’s stay for the long term. A recent update from a respected source confirmed every offer had been rejected so far and talks have been shelved for the time being.
In the meantime, Liverpool have been looking at Mount as someone they could add to their own midfield – which has been under scrutiny this season – for next season and beyond.
Now, TEAMtalk has been told by our insider, Graeme Bailey, that although Chelsea still have some confidence about keeping Mount, things have not gone as they expected and they will have to sell him in the summer if they can’t get him to agree to updated terms.
“Of all the transfer situations we will see develop at Stamford Bridge over the coming weeks and months the most interesting could be that of Mason Mount,” Bailey told us.
“Mount was close to signing a new contract in September when Reece James signed a long-term deal.
“Chelsea admittedly did not foresee this situation going on like it has, even when the initial deal was not signed they thought he would be sorted before the World Cup.
“Following his return from Qatar, the club targeted a deal just after the window but those talks stalled.”
Chelsea still have Mason Mount confidence
“Chelsea remain confident about keeping him, but if a deal is not agreed by the summer then they will sell him,” Bailey continued.
“Interest is growing in Mount’s situation and Liverpool, who are looking at a midfield overhaul this summer, like him a lot, and it is not going to be much of a surprise to see others joining the chase.”
This season, Mount has played 31 times in all competitions. Along the way, he has scored three goals and provided six assists.
It remains to be seen how much more time the attacking midfielder will have left at Stamford Bridge. But at the age of 24, it will certainly be interesting to see what the future holds for him.
Proven in the Premier League and on the international stage, Mount is approaching some of his prime years. Whether he fulfils his potential with Chelsea or another club, only time will tell.
But the Blues are clearly dealing with the reality of the situation, planning for either eventuality.
