Jose Fonte powered home two headers as Southampton fought back to rescue a late 2-2 draw with Fulham in a frantic Premier League dust-up at St Mary's.
The home side scrambled out of the bottom three of the table with this point, but it was a close run thing with Fulham dominant in the second half and perhaps deserving of the win from an always entertaining afternoon.
Nigel Adkins's side made a glorious start to the day when Fonte headed Adam Lallana's corner into the net after only four minutes.
Fulham's persistence paid off after a period of sustained pressure when John Arne Riise's driven ball was turned into his own net by the unfortunate home defender Jos Hooiveld - who replaced the injured Frazer Richardson early in the first period - on 69 minutes.
Fulham substitute Kieran Richardson seemed to have won it for the visitors on 88 minutes when he saw deflected effort fly into the net via Sascha Riether's cutback with the ball coming off Hooiveld to leave home goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga with no chance.
But Fonte rescued the day for Saints when he arrived in the area to head into the net a minute later from a wicked Danny Fox delivery with one minute of normal time remaining.
Southampton now have a draw to go with their one win from the opening seven games of the season while Fulham manager Martin Jol must be wondering how his side never picked up all three points from the afternoon.
Southampton have four points - exactly the same as they had in the last season they were in the Premier League in 2004-05. They finished that season last and were relegated.
It is not being melodramatic to suggest they will need to tighten up dramatically to avoid a similar fate this term.
Fulham looked listless for periods of the first half with Ricky Lambert knocking a shot wide from Jay Rodriguez's pass on 17 minutes and Riether clearing a Jason Puncheon effort off his line five minutes later with Mark Schwarzer failing to collect a high ball.
Schwarzer blocked a sturdy effort Lambert six minutes prior to half-time before Fulham assumed control in the second period as the ball came off Maya Yoshida and hit a post before bouncing to safety on the hour-mark under pressure from Steve Sidwell.
Gazzaniga then came up with a stunning save to halt a Rodallega header effort before Fulham finally restored parity at 1-1. Rodriguez also saw a header bounce into the ground and fly over the bar from a Lallana cross on 86 minutes, but Fulham certainly did not deserve to lose this contest.

Jose Fonte - Led by example with a two fine goals and rescued a point for his Southampton when all seemed lost. Will maybe need to stop a few more hitting his own net if Saints are going to stay up.
