Matt Grice Would Give Back Fight of the Night Bonus To Have Won at UFC 157

Injured UFC Featherweight Matt Grice Breathing on His Own, Responding to Verbal Cues

Matt Grice would give back his $50,000 Fight of the Night bonus to have gotten the win over Dennis Bermudez at UFC 157: Rousey vs. Carmouche.

Grice and Bermudez turned in a Fight of the Year candidate battle at UFC 157. Bermudez was knocked down in the first round when Grice caught him flush with a punch. Bermudez came back, nearly finishing Grice in the final round with a series of well-placed punches. Both overcame adversity, and in the end, Berumdez was awarded a split decision victory.

It was a fight that no one was the loser in, according to UFC president Dana White.

“That’s one of those fights that there’s no loser. There is no loser in that fight,” said White following the Feb. 23 event. “When you turn on your TV set and you put down your money, or you buy a ticket, that’s what you expect to show up and see.”

It was no surprise when the promotion announced that Grice and Bermudez earned Fight of the Night honors, but Grice would give it back to have gotten the win.

“I think it was a really close fight. I have a lot of respect for Dennis. He’s a tough competitor. I didn’t come away with the W. I’m stoked to get the Fight of the Night, but I’d give it back for a win any day,” said Grice. “My goal is to come here and win. The Fight of the Night is a bonus, but I came to win.”

Grice is 1-2 in his most recent stint in the UFC, but after his UFC 157 performance, he is in no danger of being cut by the organization.

“As a fight fan, those are the fights you want to watch, and those are the kinds of fights where guys won’t get cut,” said White. “It’s pretty easy, pretty simple.”
