Atletico Madrid are reportedly lining up Chelsea's Conor Gallagher as a potential alternative to Matt O'Riley this summer.

The Celtic star was the clear outfield standout last season as he hit a staggering 19 goals and 18 assists for the club in 49 appearances under Brendan Rodgers. It was the midfielder's best campaign by some distance and brought with it a number of approaches including an official bid from Atleti back in January. That offer was booted out by Rodgers and the club but they now face an anxious summer with more sides interested.

Diego Simeone's side are still keen but they could be forced to move on from O'Riley should their efforts be in vain with Celtic's asking price believed to be closer to the £30million mark.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano is today reporting that Chelsea and England midfield star Gallagher is now on the Spanish giants' shortlist as they consider their plans for next term.

He writes: "Understand Atlético Madrid remain the most interested club in Conor Gallagher this summer. Atléti have made contact with Chelsea for Gallagher as he’s one of the names in the shortlist. Not an easy deal as still expensive — but Atlético interest is genuine."

It comes as Saul gets set to leave Atleti for La Liga rivals Valencia. That move could also have a knock-on effect for O'Riley if they continue to chase his signature.
