Why Liam Marshall epitomises everything Wigan want in a player
Wigan coach Matt Peet praised Liam Marshall as ‘exactly the type of player the club wants to have’ after the winger hit a proud milestone.
Marshall, 26, scored four tries to help the Warriors thrash Wakefield 60-0 in their first home game of the season on Friday night.
His fourth try was also his 100th for his hometown club, in his 124th appearance.
“He’s a good lad and gets what he deserves,” Wigan coach Peet said after the game.
“He works hard at his game and has got plenty of ability. We know we’ve got players that, if their work ethic is right and start to the game is right, then we can trouble teams; and he is a great example of that. I’m pleased for him, he deserves it.”
Marshall went down a slightly unconventional route into the first team. He wasn’t initially given a first team contract after his time in the academy. He then plied his trade in the club’s reserves and enjoyed an impressive season in the Championship for Swinton. Marshall also worked as a trainee accountant before being signing his first full-time contract.
The England Knights international has worked incredibly hard for the position he now finds himself in.
Peet added: “It’s a great story of not giving up and that sums him up.
“He has that never say die attitude and epitomises what we want of a player here on and off the field. When he’s not winding us all up he’s a pleasure to be around! I’m chuffed for him.”

Wigan captain Liam Farrell also praised Marshall: “I’ll not say to much about him playing-wise, you can see that about him on the pitch.
“He’s a very bubbly, lively lad but very humble and grounded as well.
“He has found a way to work hard on his game and he works hard day in, day out. I think on the pitch he just gets all his rewards from that.”
