Chelsea and Bayern Munich have both tabled their opening offers for Juventus defender Matthijs de Ligt, according to one journalist.

The centre-back joined Juventus in 2019 as they paid Ajax £67.8million for him. He has gone on to win Serie A once, a Coppa Italia and a Supercoppa Italiana while at the club.

But De Ligt’s three-year association with Juve looks set to end during the current transfer window. Chelsea are desperate to sign him after the exits of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen, while Bayern are also keen and have reached an agreement with him.

De Ligt’s release clause reportedly stands at £103m. But Juve will accept offers of less than that.

In the early hours of Thursday morning, Fabrizio Romano revealed Juve were ‘expecting’ bids to come in for the 22-year-old imminently. Romano also stated De Ligt is ‘close to leaving’.

Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla provides an update on De Ligt’s situation, via Sport Witness. He reveals both Chelsea and Bayern have acted on their interest by submitting bids.

Chelsea’s sits at £59.5m, plus bonuses. Bayern though, have beaten that offer by putting an initial £63.8m on the table, plus an extra £4.2m in add-ons.

Juve apparently want £68m up front, so they don’t end up taking a loss on the Netherlands international.

Bayern just ahead of Chelsea in Matthijs de Ligt race

This means both Chelsea and Bayern will either need to increase their bids or talk Juve down slightly. At this point, it seems Bayern are slightly ahead of the Blues in proceedings.

The German champions already have Dayot Upamecano, Lucas Hernandez, Tanguy Nianzou and Chris Richards as options in central defence.

But Bayern executive Oliver Kahn has explained why they could bring a new player in. “We’re happy with the quality we have at centre-back,” he said.

“But we can improve when it comes to leadership, loudness and presence.”

Kahn’s hopes of capturing De Ligt are increased by Bayern’s relationship with De Ligt’s agent. This is ‘excellent’, according to Pedulla, which could prove pivotal to the star ending up in Bavaria.

Chelsea are in more desperate need of some new centre-halves to replace Rudiger and Christensen.

New owner Todd Boehly may need to green light an increased bid if they are to fight off Bayern and bring De Ligt to the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Callum Hudson-Odoi is reportedly a target for another English club after they were put off an alternative signing.
