Mauricio Pochettino has explained his decision to start Fernando Llorente against Real Madrid, admitting he know Tottenham's starting XI would surprise.

Llorente was handed just his second start for Spurs, the first coming a month ago against Barnsley in the League Cup, as Pochettino opted for two strikers at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Pochettino was pleased with the tactical switch, telling reporters: "Llorente fixed their centre-backs, so Harry had more freedom to move around.

"We thought Fernando's experience was important today."

"I knew you would be surprised with the starting XI. It is important to be flexible, and have different ways of playing."

Kane was denied twice by Keylor Navas, the second a fingertip save when the striker was through one-on-one, and up the other end Spurs captain Hugo Lloris thwarted Madrid throughout.

Pochettino added: "Hugo was fantastic. He showed his real level. We saw today why I say he's one of best in world.

"Real Madrid had some very clear chances, when our keeper was fantastic. Also Keylor with superb hand from Harry Kane."
