The deal is reported to be worth in excess of £42.5m – and all-but ends speculation that he is set to move to Spanish giants Real Madrid.

He told the club’s official website: “I am honoured to have signed a new long-term contract as we approach one of the most significant periods in the club’s history and be the manager that will lead this team into our new world-class stadium.

“This is just one of the factors that makes this one of the most exciting jobs in world football and we are already making plans to ensure we continue to build on the great work that everyone has contributed to over the past four years.

“Daniel [Levy, the chairman] and I have spoken at length about our aspirations for this football club. We both share the same philosophies to achieve long-term, sustainable success.

“This is a special club – we always strive to be creative in the way we work both on and off the pitch and will continue to stick to our principles in order to achieve the success this club deserves.”

Pochettino arrived at White Hart Lane in 2014 after Spurs pinpointed the Southampton manager as the man to take them forward.

This season Tottenham reached the last 16 of the Champions League, losing to the 2016-17 finalists Juventus. Although they again ended the campaign without silverware, the Argentine said it was another year of progress,

In particular, beating Real Madrid saw speculation linking him with the holders intensify, with the Spanish champons falling far behind Barca in La Liga.

Chelsea, the 2016-17 Premier League champions, were also rumoured to be ready to make him their highest paid manager ever following the expected departure of Antonio Conte within the next few weeks.

That talk is all put to bed now and Tottenham can start planning for the future after the board’s total backing was given to their manager.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy added: “I am delighted we have agreed a new, extended contract with Mauricio.”
