Former Pakistan skipper and all-rounder Shahid Afridi has hinted at possibly hanging up his boots once and for all, after revealing that the next year’s Pakistan Super League (PSL) could well be his last season.
Afridi is currently contracted with Multan Sultans, his third franchise in the league. He has earlier played for Karachi Kings (one season) and Peshawar Zalmi (two seasons), but has mentioned that he would like to represent Quetta Gladiators.
Shahid Afridi Hints At Retirement
“Maybe this ends up being my last PSL. I would like to play for Quetta Gladiators this season, provided Multan allow me to leave. If Nadeem Omar and Quetta’s owners want to have me, I would love to represent them,” Afridi was quoted as saying to reporters.
Shahid Afridi retired from international cricket back in 2016 but continued to play league cricket mostly in Pakistan. He has won the PSL with Peshawar Zalmi in his second season at the franchise, and also played a minor role for the Multan Sultans when they won the trophy last year.
The 44-year-old has picked up 44 wickets in 50 matches in the PSL while conceding at an economy of 6.97 rpo. He hasn’t been his usual self with the bat but continues to play cameos at a quick pace. He has amassed 465 runs at a strike rate of 153.46, which ranks fourth among the players who have played at least 30 innings.
PSL to be held in the January – February time window
There was a lot of chatter as to when it would be feasible to organize the upcoming season of PSL. The covid-19 pandemic has already hampered the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) scheduling of the PSL in the last two seasons.
It has now been finalized that the PSL will be held sometime in January-February 2022. Earlier, it was supposed to be played in April-May but a potential clash with the IPL would have ruined the revenue stream for the league.
For now, it has been decided that the league will be played across two venues, viz. Lahore and Karachi.
