Megan Rapinoe and Sue Bird, the premier power couple of the sports world, are appearing on the cover of GQ's "Modern Lovers" issue. Shot in black and white and locked in an embrace, they look absolutely gorgeous and totally happy together.
Rapinoe and Bird are each incredibly successful athletes in their sports — Rapinoe with the USWNT, Bird with the WNBA's Seattle Storm — and active in fighting sexism and systemic racism. They've been engaged since last fall, and told GQ all about how Rapinoe popped the question. Sitting by the infinity pool while they were on vacation in Antigua with friends, just weeks after leaving the WNBA bubble, Rapinoe suddenly felt that it was the right time.
Wearing a bucket hat, Rapinoe got down on one knee. Before she could get a word out, Bird — who had figured out what was about to happen — asked her to take the bucket hat off. The photo Bird posted to announce their engagement would've had a much different feel if Rapinoe hadn't taken off that hat.
GQ is releasing two other covers for their "Modern Lovers" issue, both of which feature athletes. Top ranked tennis player Naomi Osaka and her partner, rapper Cordae, are on one. Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson and his wife, singer and actress Ciara, are on the other.
Here are a few more shots from the phenomenal Rapinoe/Bird photo shoot.
