Memphis Depay has made his intentions regarding a move to Tottenham clear after a report claimed the Dutchman already has one and a half feet out of the door.
Barcelona are seeking to pull off a trio of deals in the coming weeks. Their forward line could assume a whole new look if Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski sign from Leeds and Bayern Munich respectively. Furthermore, Ousmane Dembele finally looks on course to sign a new contract.
Xavi can already call upon Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Ferran Torres, Ansu Fati and Memphis Depay. According to Spanish outlet Sport, Depay could become the fall guy if reinforcements arrive.
The 28-year-old Dutch international has rarely put a foot wrong at the Camp Nou. Indeed, the report states Xavi would be a reluctant seller, though is fully aware a sale is required to finance other moves.
Depay is reportedly being pushed out and is claimed to already have a foot and a half out the exit door. His current contract expires next summer and Barca are desperate to cash in while they still can.
The obvious question left to ask is where will he go?
Monday’s version of Sport put Tottenham as well as Italian giants Inter Milan and Juventus in the mix. Today’s update concerns Spurs specifically.
It’s noted Antonio Conte’s side are more than capable of matching Barcelona’s £17m price tag. What’s more, the two clubs recently conducted business regarding Clement Lenglet.
Memphis wants no part of Spurs
However, the article goes on to claim Depay has no intention of joining the Conte revolution in north London.
He is deemed not seduced by the budding project and instead wishes to remain at Barca and fight for his place. The fact Tottenham can offer Champions League football is not a part of Depay’s considerations.
Depay reportedly hopes to remain in situ in the knowledge he’ll become a free agent next summer. At that time, he’ll be free to negotiate a deal of his own which could be far more lucrative financially.
Why would Tottenham want Depay?
Spurs can already call upon a star-studded forward line. Harry Kane and Son Heung-min are guaranteed starters. Dejan Kulusevski and Richarlison will likely compete for the third starting role, while Lucas Moura remains in reserve.
However, Moura claimed he only has one year left on his contract with the club holding an option for a further 12 months.
Tottenham will be loathed to lose him for free, meaning they’ll likely trigger the option before selling him next summer. A return to Brazil with Sao Paolo has been mooted if they can finance a move.
Signing Depay now would remove the need to scramble for a replacement forward next summer. What’s more, Depay is versatile, being capable of operating anywhere across the front line.
At £17m, the Dutchman looks excellent value on paper. The biggest issue if Spurs do firm up their interest will be convincing Depay they’re the right fit.
