Mercury announce Diana Taurasi to miss 4 weeks with fractured sternum

The Phoenix Mercury will be without one of their best players for at least four weeks. Diana Taurasi is expected to miss at least a month due to a fracture in her sternum, the team announced Tuesday.

In a release, the team revealed Taurasi suffered the injury during the team's May 16 game against the Connecticut Sun.

Despite the injury, Taurasi appeared in the team's next two games. She scored 17 points in 27 minutes during a win over the Washington Mystics on May 17. Taurasi then played 24 minutes against the Sun on May 21. She scored 13 points and added 4 assists in that game, an 84-67 loss.

Taurasi has played in all four games with the Mercury this season. She's averaging 15.8 points and 3.8 assists per contest. After going 13-9 last season, the Mercury have opened the 2021 WNBA season 2-2.

The injury comes at an inconvenient time for Taurasi. With 6 more points, Taurasi will become the first player in WNBA history with 9,000 career points.
