Paul Merson has hinted that Arsenal will have no excuses if they finish outside the top four next season after ‘buying well’ this summer.

Arsenal have been very busy in the transfer market, signing Gabriel Jesus, Fabio Vieira and Marquinhos so far.

Arsenal dominate top ten net spenders in Europe since 2020 but Spurs not far behind

Technical director Edu is still negotiating many deals and the club’s business seems to be far from done.

The Gunners have made two bids for Ajax’s Lisandro Martinez and Leeds United’s Raphinha, but have failed to agree a fee with either club.

And the club’s former midfielder Merson has revealed details of a conversation he had with Edu on Sunday.

He admits that Arsenal are “looking good” and has confirmed that the Premier League club are working on a “couple more” deals.

“They are looking good,” Merson told Sky Sports (quotes via the Evening Standard). “I saw Edu on Sunday and we had a little chat and I think they’ve bought well. They’re trying to get a couple more players in and I think they could have a good season, Arsenal.

“I think try and get in the top four, and then you know small steps. But I think top four would definitely be the aim this season. I think they bought well.

“They’ve got young players in the team that have got another season under their belt so I don’t think there are too many excuses at Arsenal now there’s a good little team there.

“I can’t say [which targets Edu was talking to me about]. He was talking to me in confidence. We were at Elton John’s!”

Meanwhile, Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Arsenal are weighing up the possibility of signing Leicester midfielder Youri Tielemans “more than” Lazio’s Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.

Speaking on the Que Golazo podcast, Romano said: “I see some of these names mentioned. Milinkovic-Savic is always mentioned in the Italian press, but Lazio want €75-80million (£68.7million) for Milinkovic-Savic, so it is a really complicated one.

“I am sure that Tielemans is a good opportunity because he is out of contract next summer.

“He is not extending his Leicester contract, so this is why Arsenal are exploring that possibility more than Milinkovic-Savic today.”
