Paul Merson has revealed the only reason he thinks Harry Kane will remain at Tottenham, as there are links between him and some big clubs.

Kane has been one of the Premier League’s biggest talents for much of his time in the top flight. Indeed, he showed his class early on, notching 21 goals in his first full season.

While many categorised that as a fluke, he netted 25 league goals the following season. Since then, he has continued on the path to becoming one of the league’s greatest ever goalscorers.

Indeed, the England skipper has racked up 193 goals in 294 Premier League appearances.

Kane is now within touching distance of becoming the league’s second-highest goalscorer ever. Indeed, he is within 15 goals of Wayne Rooney’s 208.

Should he continue banging in the goals, he could reach the former Manchester United star this season. Kane has already notched 10 goals in 12 games so far this campaign.

That makes him the second-highest goalscorer this season, bettered only by Erling Haaland, who has stunned the league with 17 goals so far.

Kane is still only 29, so should have a number of years to surpass Rooney. After he does so, the only man left to beat is Alan Shearer, who holds the all-time Premier League scoring record with 260 goals.

Merson details Kane transfer prospects

There have been reports linking Kane with a move away a few times over the past few years. Indeed, Manchester City reportedly wanted him, before opting for Haaland.

Former Premier League star Merson feels a move from Tottenham to City for Kane could no longer happen. He also thinks remaining at Tottenham gives the striker the best chance at making history.

“Kane will only break the all-time Premier League goalscoring record with Tottenham because, in my view, Manchester City are no longer an option,” he told the Daily Star.

“Kane and Erling Haaland is never going to work and Alan Shearer’s record is the one he’s got to go for, now. If he’s not going to win trophies, you may as well collect an individual accolade.

“People say ‘Haaland will beat the record’ but he won’t be here long enough. If Kane does it, it’s not going to be a record that’s broken next week. It will probably be there forever.”

Indeed, remaining as the main man at Tottenham will give Kane a great chance at surpassing Shearer’s record.

No point in Bayern transfer

There have also been links between Kane and Bayern Munich. Indeed, Robert Lewandowski’s move to Barcelona left a gap for a star striker, which the German giants reportedly think Kane can fill.

However, Merson thinks a move to Bayern would be pointless after all the hard work Kane has done in England.

“There is talk that Bayern Munich are serious about signing Kane but going there and winning the Bundesliga is probably the equivalent of Desmond Douglas winning at table tennis in the summer while on holiday,” he said.

“I just can’t see Kane getting this far down the line, jumping ship and moving abroad. It really wouldn’t make too much sense when you’re on the verge of making history in the Premier League.”

It is pretty much a sure thing for Bayern to win the Bundesliga every season. A move there for the Englishman would not represent much of a challenge.

It would seem a waste of the chance to make history in England, as Merson says. That accolade might well be the reason that Kane stays at Tottenham.

However, there is a chance that the striker moves on, as he has reportedly put contract talks with Spurs on ice for the time being.
