Mestron Holdings Berhad's (KLSE:MESTRON) investors will be pleased with their splendid 253% return over the last three years

The most you can lose on any stock (assuming you don't use leverage) is 100% of your money. But in contrast you can make much more than 100% if the company does well. To wit, the Mestron Holdings Berhad (KLSE:MESTRON) share price has flown 248% in the last three years. How nice for those who held the stock! The last week saw the share price soften some 2.4%.

Now it's worth having a look at the company's fundamentals too, because that will help us determine if the long term shareholder return has matched the performance of the underlying business.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

Mestron Holdings Berhad was able to grow its EPS at 32% per year over three years, sending the share price higher. In comparison, the 52% per year gain in the share price outpaces the EPS growth. This suggests that, as the business progressed over the last few years, it gained the confidence of market participants. It is quite common to see investors become enamoured with a business, after a few years of solid progress.

You can see how EPS has changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).

What About Dividends?

It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. As it happens, Mestron Holdings Berhad's TSR for the last 3 years was 253%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.

A Different Perspective

We're pleased to report that Mestron Holdings Berhad rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 25% over the last year. And yes, that does include the dividend. The TSR has been even better over three years, coming in at 52% per year. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Even so, be aware that Mestron Holdings Berhad is showing 3 warning signs in our investment analysis , and 1 of those makes us a bit uncomfortable...
