A Met Police officer will appear in court charged with assault by beating over the arrest of a man in Romford in November.

PC Jonathan Marsh, 33, will appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday after an investigation by the police watchdog, the IOPC.

He is alleged to have used excessive force against a man he had arrested on November 13th after police attended a report of a man causing criminal damage outside a shop on Atlanta Boulevard in Romford.

The Met said the person arrested had been mistakenly identified as a suspect and was later de-arrested at the scene.

A spokesperson for the IOPC said it began an investigation in February after it received a complaint referral from the Met Police.

Prosecutors authorised the charge of assault by beating after a file of evidence was sent to them in April.

PC Marsh is attached to the Met Police unit covering Havering, Barking and Dagenham and Redbridge.

He is currently on restricted duties.
