Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is officially getting a remake, titled Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater (that's 'delta' not 'triangle').

The original game released in 2004 on the PlayStation 2, and has been cited as one of the best games in the franchise and of all time, for its expanded stealth mechanics using a jungle setting, fun '60s James Bond vibes, balance of gameplay and tragic story, and buckets of Hideo Kojima-branded weirdness.

Although the remake was announced for PlayStation 5 at this week's PlayStation Showcase, it is also coming to Xbox Series X|S and Windows. Kojima won't be involved, following his departure from Konami.

The publisher is developing the game in-house with assistance from Virtuos, who previously created a previous Metal Gear Solid HD collection. A new trio of MGS 1, 2 and 3 ports, called the Master Collection vol 1, is set for Autumn this year.

A statement from the development team reads: "We are remaking Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, one of the most beloved instalments of the Metal Gear series, revealing the origin story of Snake, as Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater. We are working hard for Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater to be a faithful recreation of the original story and game design, while evolving the gameplay with stunning visuals and a seamless user experience.

"Simultaneously, we will deliver the Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection series, the most complete compilation that celebrates the 35th anniversary of the series. The Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection allows fans to play the games as they were, as first released on the latest platforms."

A further blog post from Konami confirms that the Master Collection will include the expanded Substance and Subsistence versions of MGS 2 and 3, respectively (which would mean the first two, pre-Solid, Metal Gear games are bundled in), while the new remake will "star the original voice characters."

Whether that means that David Hayter, Josh Keaton, Lori Allen, Neil Ross and co are returning to give brand new performances, or that the remake will reuse archive audio, is unknown at this point.

We also don't know for sure if "the latest platforms" means the Master Collection is coming to Switch or not, sorry.
