The Mets have overtaken the Yankees as New York City’s most popular baseball team, according a poll conducted by Quinnipiac University in March.
The survey found that 45 percent of the city’s baseball fans call the Mets their favorite team, while 43 percent are Yankees fans.
The 2 percentage point difference, though, is within the poll’s margin of error of 3.6 percent among the 750 baseball fans surveyed.
While the Yankees have a longer, richer and more successful history and have traditionally been the city’s favorite team, the Mets have had more recent success and come into the 2017 season with higher expectations. The Mets have made the playoffs two years in a row, winning the NL Pennant in 2015 before losing in the World Series to the Royals. The Yanks have failed to advance to the postseason in three of the last four seasons.
The Yankees maintain their status as the most popular baseball team in New York State, according to the poll, as 48 percent of the state’s baseball fans support the Yankees, to 34 percent for the Mets.
