Former England captain Michael Vaughan has made a left-field suggestion to include white-ball phenomenon Liam Livingstone in the Test squad for the remainder of the series against India. The ECB, on Sunday, announced Jos Buttler will miss the fourth Test at the Kia Oval as the wicketkeeper and his wife are expecting their second child soon.

Michael Vaughan reckons it would be a good opportunity to unleash Livingstone in the Test arena as well, after the right-hander took the white-ball summer by storm, both in international cricket and then in The Hundred.

The swashbuckling batsman whacked a terrific century against Pakistan before smashing 348 runs at a strike rate of 178.46 in Hundred and finishing as the Player Of The Tournament.

As far as his red-ball credentials go, the Lancashire batsman averages 38.69 in 61 first-class games, where he has notched up 7 centuries.

With @josbuttler missing the next Test I think I would have been tempted to give @liaml4893 a call up,” Michael Vaughan tweeted.

Chris Woakes has returned to the England Test squad after missing the first three Tests due to a heel injury. Jonny Bairstow will take the wicketkeeping gloves for the fourth Test while Sam Billings has been added to the squad as Buttler’s replacement.

Root will not go down as a great captain until he beats Australia: Michael Vaughan

With the win over India in Leeds, Joe Root became England‘s most successful Test captain, with 27 victories, overtaking Michael Vaughan’s tally of 26. However, the 2005 Ashes-winning skipper feels Root will be on the list of great English leaders only if he defeats Australia.

“I realise I might cop a little bit of flak for this but Joe will not go down as a great captain until he beats Australia, probably even in his own mind, and who knows, his third crack at it this winter might be his last. Not many get four bites at the cherry. When you receive that great phone call to offer you the England job, your sole focus is on how to beat Australia. You want to win the Ashes more than anything and anyone who disagrees is lying,” Vaughan wrote in his column for The Telegraph

Root, so far, has captained in two Ashes series – England suffered a 4-0 humiliation in Australia in 2017/18, and then Australia retained the urn in the 2019 series with a 2-2 draw. The Three Lions tour Down Under later this year.
