Derby County completed their second signing of the January transfer window after landing Matt Clarke from Middlesbrough.

The centre-back signed on a permanent contract after Derby reached an undisclosed agreement with Boro and he is now primed to make his debut against Sheffield United at the weekend.

Clarke has played 17 games for Boro this season in all competitions, but found himself pushed down the pecking order at the Riverside. It is Clarke's third spell with Derby having had two profitable loan spells with the club in the 2019/20 season and in the 20/21 campaign.

Middlesbrough paid an undisclosed fee for his services from Brighton in August 2022 and despite playing 44 league games in that time, Boro fans were sorry to see him go. Here's what they had to say on Twitter, now known as X, about his departure to Pride Park.

Gabriel: "Strange decision spending money on Edmundson and losing Clarke but UTB."

Mike Lewis: "Our best defender I reckon. Strong at the back and a scoring threat from set pieces (when we beat the first man!) What's the logic in this?"

Aaron: "Derby will stay up now."

Anthony Matthews: "Bad decision he was by far our best player at the start of the season before he got injured."

Jonathen Allen: "Shocking decision to get rid."

Alex Jones: "Our best defender but because he can’t play fancy passes like the others he gets rid, only one who can score of a corner too?"

Kevin Scott: "Unless he has a underlying injury we are not aware of, I absolutely cannot believe people at the club think Edmondson is a better defender than Matt Clarke and I am absolutely baffled we have swapped the pair in our squad. We have made a poor defence even poorer."
