Championship side Middlesbrough have signed USA international Zack Steffen on loan from Premier League champions Manchester City.
The 27-year-old penned a contract extension at Man City last November. He is keen to play more regularly ahead of this winter’s World Cup.
Middlesbrough boss Chris Wilder told the club’s official website: “I think it’s a big coup for us and so I’m delighted we’ve brought Zack in.
“We knew we had to improve the goalkeeping department. We brought in Liam Roberts and now we’re adding Zack, who has just signed a four-and-a-half-year deal with Man City.
“Man City don’t hand out four-and-a-half-year contracts if they don’t think anything of them.”
Steffen, who joined City from Columbus Crew for a reported £7million in 2019, made nine appearances in all competitions for Pep Guardiola’s side last season.
Capped 29 times by his country, he has made 21 City appearances in total and spent the 2020/21 season on loan in the Bundesliga with Fortuna Dusseldorf.
Wilder added: “Everyone knows his situation, he needed to play because of the World Cup. He had an agreement with Man City, but he could have easily stayed there and sat comfortably as their number two.”
Elsewhere, Sergio Aguero has warned Erling Haaland that he will have to undergo a “period of adaptation” before he reaches his full potential at Man City:
“Haaland’s is a very important signing. I think his goalscoring ability is proven. His stats through the German league and in Europe confirms this,” Aguero said (quotes via Manchester Evening News).
“Logically, he will have a period of adaptation to a league as strong as the Premier League but I think he will go through his own process and the results will be seen soon.
“I think that an elite player like him will know how to reconcile his style with that of Pep Guardiola’s teams.
“It may take a while, as it did in the beginning for me. But once he gets into gear everything will be simpler. I think he has the talent to fulfil what is asked of him, which are goals.”
