Middlesbrough Women beat Hull City on penalties to set up a mouthwatering derby clash with Newcastle United in the third round of the Women's FA Cup.

Boro returned to winning ways having recently lost to Doncaster Belles and drawing with Barnsley, as they beat the side that pipped them to National League Division One promotion last term. Having dominated over 90 minutes, Mick Mulhern's side failed to grab a win in normal time, but ensured they left Humberside with a deserved win as they prevailed 5-4 in the penalty shoot-out.

The win sets up a third-round clash away at Newcastle United Women, who are currently seventh in the Women's Championship - two divisions above Boro. That game will be played at the Newcastle Falcons' Kingston Park this Sunday, with kick-off at 1 pm.

Reacting to the Hull City win, boss Mulhern said: "It was an excellent performance. We were in control of the game for 95% of it. We hit the bar three times, had one cleared off the line, and the keeper made numerous saves. They had one shot on target all game.

"We're really happy with that against a team from the league above. We didn't want it to go to penalties because we deserved to win it in the 90. But the girls showed great character and the response was magnificent, especially when you consider they beat us on penalties in this competition on penalties last year.

"We had a little dip recently, but this was much more like it. We went for it from the start and thankfully we got through in the end. It's always a test against a side in a tier that we want to be in. Tier three is the next step for us. We've got to get there first, but it's good when you can match them and beat them."

And looking ahead to the Newcastle clash, Mulhern continued: "Now we've got something to look forward to against Newcastle United. Some of our players are from there, I'm from Newcastle... They're a really good side and are doing very well in tier two.

"It's a big step. They're a professional side and clearly we're going to be the underdogs. But we'll enjoy the day out and see what happens. We wanted to see how far we could go in this competition in the hope of testing ourselves against one of the big guns. We've got that in Newcastle United. It doesn't come much better than that really."
