Mikel Arteta calls on Arsenal academy to keep improving in light of Saka and Smith Rowe success

Mikel Arteta calls on Arsenal academy to keep improving in light of Saka and Smith Rowe success

Mikel Arteta says the Arsenal academy cannot rest on its laurels just because they’ve brought through Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe.

The two youngsters have burst onto the scene over the past two seasons and have cemented a place in the Arsenal first-team.

The pair have also broken into the senior England setup, with Smith Rowe making his debut and scoring his first goal during the most recent international break.

When asked to compare Arsenal’s academy to others in England, Arteta said: “I cannot rate compare it to others.

“What I can say is that I’m really happy and proud, and that this is not stopping here. We have to continue to evolve it, to improve it, and to keep providing players, because it’s a huge boost for the club - and obviously it’s very beneficial for many aspects.”

Arteta is delighted with the club’s production line and reveals he looks to the academy before going out into the market for new players.

“If we need some recruitment, first of all we look inside: what do we have, can we promote them, do they have the qualities to do it,” he said.

“If we don’t (have it), then obviously we have to start the process outside of our club.”
