Mikel Arteta has hailed the impact of Aaron Ramsdale’s attitude on the Arsenal dressing room and revealed he watched clips of how the goalkeeper reacted after conceding or making errors while scouting him.

Ramsdale joined Arsenal this summer from Sheffield United as part of a deal that could eventually be worth £30million.

Eyebrows were initially raised when the Gunners parted with that much money for the 23-year-old, but he has since been in excellent form.

Arteta has particularly praised Ramsdale’s attitude and been impressed by what he’s added to the Arsenal squad.

“Obviously we needed to identify where we can get better and what we were missing or how we want to mould our experience and our leadership,” said Arteta.

“And that is all obviously about personalities and the people you bring into the club, and we thought that Aaron could be very beneficial.

“I watched a lot of clips and moments after he conceded a goal, making a mistake or a difficult moment, and that’s one of the big reasons that we made a decision to sign him because he could cope with those.”

Ramsdale has quickly become a fan favourite and Arteta has noticed the bond he has with the Arsenal supporters.

“Connection is the right word,” he said. “Connection brings unity and brings a different kind of vibration between fans and players - and it’s very necessary.

“Aaron is capable of transmitting that in a natural way. His competitiveness as well, on the pitch, brings the crowd to a different level, because of his desire to win. This is the mentality that we need.”

Ramsdale has taken Bernd Leno’s place in the Arsenal team, but Arteta has been impressed by the German’s reaction.

“When you have experience with Bernd over the last three years, who he is as a person, I didn’t have any doubts,” he said.

“He is disappointed and he should be disappointed because he wants to play and is used to playing.

“But at the same time what he needs to do is raise his level. He is going to raise Aaron’s level and if Aaron is performing really well, a big part of that is because Bernd is next to him, trying to help him, trying to support him and trying to make him a better goalkeeper. That is exactly what we want.”
