Hull Kingston Rovers half-back Mikey Lewis has had a minor operation to remedy an issue which was affecting the player last season.

Lewis' kicking load was greater than ever during the 2024 campaign - as he developed open-play kicking as well as goal kicking. That caused groin flare-up, which needed to be managed over the course of the season. It resulted in the step of minor surgery being scheduled recently.

On Thursday morning, Lewis took to social media and posted "op done" with a red love heart, prompting some fans to fear the KR star player may be set for a significant spell on the sidelines - but that is not going to be the case. A three-week recovery period is expected now.

The surgery had been pre-planned by Rovers, with Lewis' involvement in England's series against Samoa and then a subsequent holiday delaying the operation. The 23-year-old had not been due to report back to KR for pre-season training for another three weeks anyway due to his international involvement causing an extended 2024 season, by which time he is expected to be healed and available to tentatively begin training again.

KR coach Willie Peters and his physio team are confident the surgery will have no effect on Lewis' ability to be ready for the start of the 2025 season, which next year begins with a Challenge Cup game. Lewis will be hoping he can pick up from where he left off on what was a brilliant campaign, that brought with it a first Grand Final appearance and the personal accolade of being awarded the Steve Prescott Man of Steel trophy.

While Lewis will now rest up ahead of his return to training in mid-December, the majority of KR's squad are now in training, including big name signing Jared Waerea-Hargreaves, with the build-up now underway to the first game on February 8th or 9th, 2025.
