Mixed fortunes on day two for Muirhead

Mixed fortunes on day two

Having narrowly seen off Russia 8-7 on the opening day in Alberta, Muirhead lost to Melanie Robillard’s new-look German rink in her second game on Sunday morning.

It was a close affair with Muirhead’s rink going down 7-6 after an extra end however they bounced back to see off Denmark’s Lene Nielsen 8-6 next time out in Canada.

Denmark recovered from a 3-0 deficit to lead 4-3 at the halfway stage and then led 6-4 going into the ninth end but Muirhead roared back to take victory.

Muirhead cleared out three Danish counters with her first stone and then made a draw for four with her second to take an 8-6 lead, and one they wouldn’t surrender again.

Scotland join the Czech Republic, Korea, Sweden and Switzerland in having won two and lost one while Canada remain unbeaten and Muirhead is happy at her start.

“We had a great first end against Denmark and got a three but after that we know we left too many stones in play,” said Muirhead. “In the ninth the four just appeared. I managed to leave her a tricky shot and it appeared.

“To come away from the first three games with two wins and one loss, we would have taken that at the start of the week.”
