MLB betting: A big division bet on Tigers, who are 13 games out of first

The Detroit Tigers are 47-54, 13 games out of first place.

In other words, an attractive team to bet on for a division title. At least to one bettor.

A BetMGM customer played an unexpected future and it wasn't cheap. He or she likes the odds on the Tigers to win the AL Central.

It would be a nice payday if it hits.

Big bet on Tigers

The bettor put $1,000 on the Tigers to win the division at 100-to-1 odds. That would pay out $100,000.

There are reasons to be interested those odds. The Tigers had won seven in a row before going to Kansas City for a weekend series. They were swept by the Royals but that didn't dissuade one bettor. Detroit has played better and has been a decent team to bet on many days. They're often underdogs.

The White Sox are 19 games over .500 and will be tough to catch, but nobody else in the AL Central is more than a game above .500. If the White Sox go in a long slump, the division would be up for grabs.

The Tigers have a lot of games to make up, but that's why the odds are so long.

Michigan is backing home teams

With sports betting legal in Michigan, many have taken to the BetMGM app to back the home teams. Even the Tigers.

The Tigers, who were nowhere near favored to win the AL Central, have 35.4 percent of the tickets to win the division title. There has to be a strong Michigan influence there.

The Tigers would need to catch fire the final two months to beat the White Sox. Even if the Tigers get hot, they'd need Chicago to struggle a bit. Making up 13 games in two months is a tall task.

One bettor thinks it's possible. BetMGM probably didn't expect to be rooting against a Detroit division title this season.
