MLB notebook: D-backs' Walker needs Tommy John surgery

Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Taijuan Walker will require season-ending Tommy John surgery after partially tearing his right ulnar collateral ligament, the team announced Wednesday.

He originally was sidelined with right forearm inflammation, going on the 10-day disabled list Sunday, but an MRI showed additional damage.

The 25-year-old Walker has a 3.46 ERA in three starts. He went 9-9 with a 3.49 ERA in 28 starts last season in his first campaign with the Diamondbacks.

"It's terribly disappointing," Arizona manager Torey Lovullo told reporters. "I hurt for him, I think this organization hurts for him. ... It's one of your players going down that we were going to count on. He's hurting. When he hurts, we all are. We're going to support him in the best situation we can, but this is a tough situation we're walking through."

--Los Angeles Angels manager Mike Scioscia said he "anticipates" that right-hander/designated hitter Shohei Ohtani will make his next start despite a blister on the middle finger of his throwing hand.

Ohtani gave up three runs on four hits in two innings against the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday night before being pulled due to the blister. He took his first career loss in a 10-1 defeat, after winning the first two starts of his career.

"We'll monitor all the way through this week and just see where he is," said Scioscia, who added that Ohtani could serve as designated hitter Thursday. "It's something he has had before and he's managed and he's not very concerned with it, but we will definitely, obviously, pay a lot of attention to it this week."

--Jose Bautista agreed to a minor league deal with the Atlanta Braves as he seeks to rekindle his career.

Bautista, 37, went unsigned as a free agent all winter after departing the Toronto Blue Jays following nine-plus seasons with the club. He struggled at the plate last season as he hit .203 with 23 home runs and 65 RBIs.

Bautista was a six-time All-Star with the Blue Jays and swatted 288 of his 331 career homers with the team. He hit 40 or more homers on three occasions, topped by a career-best 54 in 2010, a season in which he also had a career-high 124 RBIs.

--Braves right-hander Anibal Sanchez was placed on the 10-day disabled list after being injured while running in the outfield before Wednesday's game against the Philadelphia Phillies. Third baseman Johan Camargo was activated from the disabled list to take Sanchez's roster spot.

Sanchez, who was scheduled to start Thursday's series opener against the New York Mets, was running in the outfield when he strained his right hamstring and was attended to by trainers.

The 34-year-old is 1-0 with a 1.29 ERA in three games (two starts), with 14 strikeouts and 11 hits allowed in 14 innings.

--Minnesota Twins outfielder Byron Buxton was placed on the 10-day disabled list due to migraine headaches.

The move is retroactive to April 15. Buxton is batting just .195 with two RBIs in 11 games.

Outfielder Ryan LaMarre was added to the 25-man roster. LaMarre is with the Twins for their two-game series in Puerto Rico as the designated 26th man.

--Seattle Mariners left fielder Ben Gamel was activated off the 10-day disabled list.

Gamel was sidelined for six weeks with a strained right oblique muscle. He hit .275 with 11 homers and 59 RBIs in 134 games last season. His return likely will mean a reduced role for 44-year-old Ichiro Suzuki, who mostly has played in left field and is hitting .219 in 32 at-bats.

Left-hander Ariel Miranda, who started Tuesday's game, was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma to create the roster opening.
