Mo Salah should have ‘comfortably’ beaten Cristiano Ronaldo to player of the month award, says Gary Lineker

The decision to hand the Premier League player of the month award to Cristiano Ronaldo has been disputed by Gary Lineker, who believes Liverpool’s Mo Salah should have took home the prize easily.

Ronaldo was given the honour for September on Friday following an influential start to his second spell at Manchester United that has so far seen the five-time Ballon d’Or winner score twice off the bench in his second debut against Newcastle as well as netting in the win over West Ham.

He also notched a dramatic last-gasp winner against Villarreal in the Champions League to make it five goals in six appearances across all competitions, having also scored in the defeat by Young Boys of Switzerland in the group stage opener.

It is the fifth time in his illustrious career that Ronaldo has claimed player of the momth honours in the English top-flight, though Three Lions legend and Match of the Day presenter Lineker is in no doubt as to whom he believes should have been honoured.

“He’s [Ronaldo] been terrific, but @MoSalah should’ve won this….comfortably,” Lineker tweeted on Friday.

Salah was nominated for the award, along with Manchester City’s Joao Cancelo, Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger, Newcastle’s Allan Saint-Maximin and Watford winger Ismaila Sarr, having extended his own remarkable scoring streak to seven consecutive games and taken his tally for the season already to nine across all competitions.

The Egyptian forward scored against Leeds, AC Milan, Crystal Palace, Brentford and FC Porto in September, while last weekend he produced what will surely go down as one of the goals of the season in a pulsating 2-2 draw with Manchester City at Anfield.

Last month, Salah also became the 30th player to score 100 Premier League goals and the fifth-fastest.

He is the quickest player ever to reach a century of league goals for Liverpool, narrowly beating the record held by the late club legend and England 1966 World Cup winner Roger Hunt.
