Several Liverpool players took to Instagram to mark their opening-day victory over newly promoted Ipswich Town at Portman Road.

Kieran McKenna’s side put in a respectable first-half showing but Liverpool’s quality showed in the second half when Diogo Jota slotted past Christian Walton in the Tractor Boys’ goal. Jota - who started the match through the middle of the attacking third - took to Instagram after the fixture - he posted a photograph of Salah, Andrew Robertson, and himself with the caption: “Great way to start.”

Jota is a fan favorite at Anfield but struggles to get through a full season without the odd injury trouble - that normally keeps him out for several weeks at a time. Last term, he played 21 league games but still managed to register 13 goal involvement - ten goals and three assists. Jota could be a key player as he approaches his peak years at 27.

Salah secured victory with Liverpool’s second goal on 65 minutes - five after Jota’s goal. He also posted on Instagram after the match with several stories including a photograph of him celebrating his first goal of the season. His opening-day goal added to his record of scoring eight goals on previous first-weekend fixtures. The fixture also marked his 350th Liverpool appearance - he will play a key role this campaign despite several links with a move to Saudi Arabia in recent years.

The victory will be a relief to new manager Arne Slot - who managed his first competitive fixture after replacing Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool's manager in June. Most pundits have predicted a fourth-place finish for the Reds. This, in isolation, was a solid performance but the level of opposition must be considered before fans get their hopes up about about a potential title charge.

Speaking after the victory, he told TNT Sports: “The first taste in the first half was not as expected. They were on top of us and very aggressive. We couldn’t find a rhythm or any balls in behind. The second half was a joy to watch.”
