As Liverpool continues to deliver on the pitch, its contract situation behind the scenes grows ever more alarming. Mohamed Salah is one of three star players just months away from being able to negotiate a free transfer — but it has been suggested that the Reds are readying a bumper offer.

We are now into October, and Salah will be free to talk to foreign clubs from January onward. Concerningly, both Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk are in the same boat.

And those expecting rapid developments following the conclusion of the transfer market have been left disappointed, with no updates emerging from the club. However, Richard Hughes still has time to strike agreements with the trio, and a former chief scout at Manchester United believes Salah, at least, is in line for a new contract.

Salah has started the season in fine form, with five goals ansd four assists in eight appearances across all competitions. Speaking to Football Insider, Mick Brown has suggested that Liverpool will table a lucrative offer:

“I think Liverpool will break the bank in their efforts to keep him,” the ex Man United scout said. “Of all of the left-footed players who play on the right, he is the best by far.

"Liverpool without Mo Salah are not the Liverpool we have seen. He can change the game in a minute. If they’re struggling, they can get the ball to him and he’ll make something happen.

“He’s so important to the way the play. I would think they’d be desperate to keep him. They will be making every effort to tie him down to a new contract before they let him go to Saudi Arabia for nothing, I’m sure.”

The same outlet claims that Liverpool remains calm over Salah's future, and expects to tie him down to a new contract. The club has reportedly made the decision to open talks over a new deal, with those discussions expected to commence in due course.

Liverpool.com says: While it might seem like an obvious decision to open talks, it would represent a signficant statement of just how highly Salah is valued at Liverpool. Michael Edwards returned to the fold this summer, and is generally perceived as being reluctant to sanction bumper new deals for players on the wrong side of 30.

Salah, clearly, is an exception. But even in his case, "breaking the bank" would not necessarily be advisable, especially if that means going over and above what he is already earning.

These talks would not be simple at the best of times, and now there is a ticking clock as well. But there is no doubt that Liverpool should be making a concerted effort to resolve the contract situations of all three of its biggest stars (and sorting an extension for Luis Diaz, to boot).
