Monaco finished the strongest of any team in Europe down the home straight. Champions League defeat saw Liverpool slip behind Serie A’s runners-up.

Here are the top 10 strongest performers through the final 10 games of the season in all competitions…

1) Monaco – 28 points
Won: 9
Drawn: 1
Lost: 0
Goals for: 25
Goals against: 10
Final finishing position: third in Ligue 1

Monaco finished the season as the most in-form side in Europe’s top five leagues but the concession of a last-gasp equaliser on the final day condemned Philippe Clement’s to third place and the Champions League qualifying play-offs.

2) Inter Milan – 27 points
Won: 9
Drawn: 0
Lost: 1
Goals for: 28
Goals against: 10
Final finishing position: second in Serie A, Coppa Italia winners

The one game they lost, at Bologna in calamitous circumstances, cost them another Serie A title.

3) Liverpool – 25 points
Won: 8
Drawn: 1
Lost: 1
Goals for: 22
Goals against: 12
Final finishing position: second in Premier League, FA Cup winners, Carabao Cup winners

Defeat in Paris sees Jurgen Klopp’s Mentality Monsters slip below Inter in the run-in table.

4) Tottenham – 23 points
Won: 7
Drawn: 2
Lost: 1
Goals for: 25
Goals against: 5
Final finishing position: fourth in Premier League

Tottenham kept their bottle down the run-in to secure fourth spot while Arsenal’s went missing. The Gunners won five and lost five, finishing 38th in this particular table. Spurs also conceded the joint-fewest goals in Europe’s top five leagues.

5) AC Milan – 23 points
Won: 7
Drawn: 2
Lost: 1
Goals for: 14
Goals against: 5
Final finishing position: Serie A champions

Milan kept it similarly tight at the back to capitalise on Inter’s slip and secure their first Serie A title since 2011.

6) Manchester City – 22 points
Won: 7
Drawn: 1
Lost: 2
Goals for: 34
Goals against: 15
Final finishing position: Premier League champions

No team in Europe scored more goals through their final 10 games, with City bagging four more than second-highest scorers PSG.

7) Napoli – 22 points
Won: 7
Drawn: 1
Lost: 2
Goals for: 25
Goals against: 11
Final finishing position: third in Serie A

Napoli’s dropped points were fumbled in April in defeats to Fiorentina and Empoli, which sandwiched a draw with Roma, all of which left them too far off the title race but in no danger of being caught by Juventus behind them.

8) Paris Saint-Germain – 21 points
Won: 6
Drawn: 3
Lost: 1
Goals for: 31
Goals against: 12
Final finishing position: Ligue 1 champions

PSG sealed the title with four games to go, with their run-in preceded by their demoralising Champions League defeat to Real Madrid, which overshadowed the 11 games that followed amid protests from Ultras.

16 Conclusions on the Champions League final: Liverpool 0 Real Madrid 1

9) Lens – 21 points
Won: 6
Drawn: 3
Lost: 1
Goals for: 20
Goals against: 10
Final finishing position: seventh in Ligue 1

Lens spent almost the first half of the season in the European spots but after a wobble, they finished as strong as they started to consolidate seventh place.

10) Union Berlin – 20 points
Won: 6
Drawn: 2
Lost: 2
Goals for: 19
Goals against: 13
Final finishing position: fifth in Bundesliga

Union finished the season as the Bundesliga’s best side down the 10-game home straight to secure a Europa League place for next season.

10) Real Madrid – 20 points
Won: 6
Drawn: 2
Lost: 2
Goals for: 24
Goals against: 11
