Derek Chauvin found guilty of murdering George Floyd
Derek Chauvin has been convicted of murder for killing George Floyd by kneeling on his neck for more than nine minutes.
The former Minneapolis police officer’s crime prompted a wave of protests in support of racial justice in the US and across the world.
The jury unanimously convicted Chauvin of all the charges he faced - second and third degree murder, and manslaughter.
They concluded that the white former officer killed the 46-year-old black man through a criminal assault by pinning him to the ground so he could not breathe properly.
European Super League in tatters as Big Six quit breakaway
The Premier League’s Big Six have dramatically pulled out of the controversial European Super League in a remarkable U-turn that left the competition certain to collapse.
Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham had announced they were joining three Italian and three Spanish clubs in forming the new breakaway tournament, to be played midweek throughout the club season.
The proposal was met with near-universal criticism from across football and beyond, with figures including Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Prince William joining pundits, managers, players and supporters in condemning the “closed-shop” tournament.
Only 48 hours later, the project lies in tatters after half of its founding members withdrew their support.
Plan for White House-style briefings scrapped despite £2.6m spent on venue
Downing Street has scrapped plans for White House-style press conferences despite the government spending £2.6 million on the venue.
The room in No 9 Downing Street has been kitted out with cameras and rows of chairs for journalists, and the Prime Minister’s press secretary Allegra Stratton was due to field questions from political correspondents.
But it is understood Boris Johnson has axed plans for daily televised media briefings and the studio will be used for ministerial press conferences, as first reported by The Times.
PM warns of third wave ‘at some stage’ this year
Prime Minister Boris Johnson has told Britons they must not “delude” themselves at the likelihood of a third Covid wave “at some stage this year.”
However, he also announced a new “Antivirals Taskforce” to help work on new medicines for the treatment of Covid-19, including take-at-home drugs.
