The Flying Scotsman passed through Didcot Parkway Station today as it journeyed from Paddington station in London to Cardiff in the year of its centenary.

The locomotive will spend 2023 travelling across the country to allow as many people as possible to see it in its 100th anniversary year.

Crowds watched it set off from London Paddington this morning as it travelled through the Thames Valley and along the River Severn before reaching the Welsh capital.

The train is described as ‘the most famous locomotive in the world’ by the National Railway Museum.

Built in 1923 at Doncaster Works, it officially became the first locomotive to reach 100mph, and the first to circumnavigate the globe.

It also holds the world record for a non-stop run in a steam locomotive, set in 1989 with a 422-mile trip.
