The series last raced in Brazil in 2004, when it held its last race at Rio after a 10-year stint.

A handful of premier class events had previously taken place at Goiania in the late 1980s, before a one-off at Interlagos in 1992.

MotoGP officials held a press conference in Brazil on Monday to announce the planned return of the race.

The 3.4-mile Brasilia track, now named in honour of three-time Formula 1 world champion Nelson Piquet, is currently used mainly for domestic racing.

It is set to be the second South American addition to the MotoGP calendar next year, joining the revived Argentine Grand Prix at the Termas de Rio Hondo circuit.
