MSSU softball team picks up win against St. Cloud State

Mar. 15—Freshman pitcher Kiki Pickens gave up just two hits and one run in a seven-inning complete game, leading the Lions softball team to a 3-1 win over the St. Cloud State Huskies.

It was the first of two games for MSSU in the MIAA/NSIC crossover tournament Friday at Pat Lipira Field.

Pickens (7-4) struck out six and walked just one batter in the win that was a pitcher's duel through the first 5 1/2 innings.

The game was scoreless going into the bottom of the sixth inning until the Lions (21-7) unleashed their bats for three runs.

Yazmin Vargas hit her fourth triple of the season to plate Kylee Jacks and gave the Lions their first run of the game. Vargas then scored on a wild pitch, and Taylor Nuckolls also scooted home off a Katie Gray double to left-center field.

The Huskies' (16-6) lone run came in the top of the seventh off a Maggie Fitzgerald single that scored Lydia Krueger.

Vargas added two more steals (both in the first inning) to her career record and finished 2 for 3 at the plate, with an RBI and another career record run. Jacks was also 2 for 3 with a run and a steal.

Fitzgerald was 1 for 3 with an RBI, and Bree Beck finished 1 for 2 for the Huskies. Emma Eichoff (5-3) was tagged for the loss, after giving up three runs on five hits while walking three and striking out three.

Southern faced Concordia-St. Paul (Minnesota) in the second game. Check joplinglobe.com for details.
