Feb. 6—After yet another record-setting tournament for Missouri Southern thrower Peyton Barton, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association named him its Athlete of the Week on Tuesday.
Barton also was named NCAA Division II Athlete of the Week by the organization following his performance last Friday.
He is just the third male athlete from Missouri Southern to be tabbed with the honor.
Barton, who leads D-II with the best mark this season in the weight throw (22.62 meters) by more than a meter, held the previous record (22.31 meters) and exceeded that this past weekend at the Bearcat Invite in Maryville.
Barton set the school record 22.31 meters two weekends ago at Pittsburg State University and topped his own record this past weekend in Maryville with the 22.62 performance.
Barton, of McDonald County High School, now holds the fourth best D-II throw of all-time.
He has been named the MIAA Track and Field Athlete of the Week four times so far this season, including the last three weeks straight.
His 22.62-meter record tops his best indoor throw last year of 22.05 meters.
Last year Barton earned a National Championship in the event, as well as an MIAA title.
Barton competes again this weekend, when the Lions men's and women's teams travel to Pittsburg State for the ninth annual Indoor Gorilla Classic on Friday and Saturday.
