Manchester City could be set to pocket millions if they book their place in the Champions League knockout play offs.

Before giving away a two-goal lead and losing 4-2 to Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday night, City were three games without a win in the competition and sat 24th in the table. The defeat saw them drop to 25th - raising doubts over whether they will qualify to the knockout stages.

City are five points off 8th and there are 16 teams in play-off places above them. The club's chances of automatically qualifying for the last 16 are now impossible, as are the chances of landing a seeded play-off spot.

But, they can still salvage an unseeded play-off spot. PSG have now leapfrogged them in the table, meaning City must defeat Club Brugge at Etihad Stadium in their final match. Enrique's side face Stuttgart in their last game. According to Opta, as quoted by the BBC, City had an 84% chance of reaching the play-offs prior to their defeat in the French capital.

If City fail to progress they would also, of course, miss out on millions in prize money, not to mention matchday revenue as well. The Manchester Evening News has taken a close look at the prize money on offer in the competiton below.

Champions League prize money

  • Winner : £21m

  • Runner-up : £15.6m

  • Semi-finalists : £12.6m

  • Quarter-finalists : £10.5m

  • Round of 16 : £9.3m

  • Reaching knockout round play-off : £843k

  • League-phase wins : £1.77m

  • League-phase draws : £590k

How much have Man City banked so far?

  • Man City 0-0 Inter Milan (£590k)

  • SK Slovan Bratislava 0-3 Man City (£1.77m)

  • Man City 5-0 Sparta Praha (£1.77m)

  • Sporting CP 4-1 Man City (£0)

  • Man City 3-3 Feyenoord (£590k)

  • Juventus 2-0 Man City (£0)

  • Paris Saint-Germain 4-2 Man City (£0)

Taking the above numbers into account, City have already made a sizeable sum from this year's new-look competition. They pocketed £15.7million just by qualifying and then topped up their prize pot with performance-related bonuses.

Wins over Slovan Bratislava and Sparta Praha swelled the coffers by £3.5m, plus draws against Inter and Feyenoord earned £1.18m - making a total of £4.68m. So, as things stand, City are guaranteed at least £20.38m, but that final number will soar as it doesn’t take into account ticket sales - or progression into the knockouts.

How much is reaching knockouts worth?

If City reach the play-offs, they will earn £843k but last-16 qualification will see them pocket a whopping £9.3m.

Each position in the table is worth £232k, meaning the club that finishes 36th will earn that figure with an additional £232k added for every higher ranking after all eight matches.

Sneaking into the final play-off spot could therefore be worth another £3m to City, on top of all of the other prize money on offer, taking the total for getting to the round of 16 to nearly £13.2m on top of the £20.38m they've already earned.
