Head coach Nuno Espirito Santo has urged star defender Murillo to keep performing for Nottingham Forest in order to earn another opportunity with Brazil.

This international break saw the 22-year-old link up with his country for the first time after receiving the honour of a call-up. But despite racking up the air miles, he did not get on the pitch in games against Venezuela and Uruguay.

His selection was arguably long overdue in the first place, given the way he has performed in the Premier League in the Garibaldi. But Nuno believes the centre-back, who continues to be the centre of plenty of transfer speculation ahead of the January window, just needs to bide his time and continue impressing for the Reds to win his first cap.

Asked if he was frustrated Murillo did not feature for his country, Nuno said: “I don’t think so, and neither for him. We have to be proud of our players who went with their national teams.

“To be involved in the national team squad of Brazil shows the quality he has. He has to be patient and wait for his chance. But we are delighted he was involved.”

Forest had a number of players on duty for their countries during the Premier League’s fortnight hiatus. Of those to be called up, Ramon Sosa (Paraguay) is the only one yet to link back up with his teammates Trentside.

For striker Chris Wood, the international fixtures proved to be a continuation of his recent red-hot form. He notched up five goals in two games for New Zealand to take his tally for club and country for the season so far to 14.

Eight of those goals have come for the Reds, putting him one behind Bryan Roy (24) in the club’s list of all-time Premier League top scorers. He was already the All Whites’ all-time leading goalscorer and took his overall tally to 41 with his latest haul.

“Good. Amazing, amazing, amazing. I’m delighted for him that he is breaking all the records in New Zealand,” Nuno said ahead of Forest’s trip to face Arsenal on Saturday (3pm kick-off).
