Mikel Arteta is increasingly confident of securing the signing of Mykhaylo Mudryk this month after the latest developments appeared to turn the tide in Arsenal’s favour.

The Gunners have been locked in talks over a deal to bring the Ukrainian winger to Emirates Stadium this month. However, striking a deal with Shakhtar Donestsk was proving difficult – and the issue has been further complicated by interest from Chelsea.

Indeed, the Gunners’ second gambit of £44.2m plus add-ons was swiftly rebuffed by Shakhtar. And with the Ukrainians persistently pointing to the £85m fee paid by Manchester United for Antony as a marker, it seemed the Gunners were some distance apart over the deal.

Those hopes have been further dented by Chelsea bursting on to the scene. And with Todd Boehly seemingly ready to go closer to Shakhtar’s valuation, the Blues suddenly positioned themselves into a position of strength.

However, TEAMtalk revealed on Sunday that Arsenal retain a confidence that a deal for Mudryk can still be done. In addition, we also revealed the Gunners have been left unamused by Shakhtar’s tactics in their efforts to sell the winger.

Two things also put the deal still in Arsenal’s favour.

Firstly, the player himself has always made clear his ambitions to sign for Arsenal. Going public with his admiration for Arteta, he has made clear his dream of joining the Gunners.

In addition, Chelsea’s current position of 10th in the Premier League is hardly appealing for potential top-tier targets.

Now trusted transfer guru Romano has reaffirmed our message by stating Arteta has a growing belief a deal can be arranged.

Fabrizio Romano expects Mudryk to sign for Arsenal

Providing an update in his Caught Offside column, the journalist is adamant Mudryk is heading to north London.

“Of course Arsenal are confident, and Arteta too,” the transfer insider said.

“But reaching an agreement with Shakhtar is crucial. They were so strong in negotiations also in August when they turned down €30m from Everton when it sounded like a great bid.

“No deadlines have been mentioned in the negotiations, as of now; talks continue.”

The capture of Mudryk – if and when it happens – will undoubtedly give Arsenal a much-needed boost. They remain five-points clear of Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table. However, Pep Guardiola’s side will likely push them all the way with any slip punished.

To that end, Arteta knows Arsenal cannot afford many mistakes. And with his attack missing the injured Gabriel Jesus, providing another option is key to their push.

They are back in action on Monday night when they tackle League One Oxford in the FA Cup third round. Arteta is expected to shake up his side for the game, though will want a return to winning ways.

Indeed, they were held to a disappointing 0-0 draw by Newcastle in their last game. After the match, Gary Neville reflected on what he felt was an Arsenal squad running out of ideas. To that end, he also suggested Arteta has no faith in a £34m summer signing.

That issue, though, can be sorted in one fell swoop by landing Mudryk. Negotiations will continue, but for now, there is a growing optimism that he will move to north London this month.
