Why Nainggolan should be first on Arsenal's transfer list after appointing new manager

Not that we’re getting massively ahead of ourselves but according to reports, Luis Enrique wants to bring Roma star Radja Nainggolan to Arsenal.

If he takes charge of Arsenal this summer.

Which he hasn’t.

Because Wenger hasn’t even left yet.

But when the Frenchman does finally vacate his manager’s seat after 22 years in charge this summer, former Barcelona boss Enrique is one of the names heavily linked to replace him.

Indeed, Wenger even hinted that Enrique would be an ideal choice to be the next head coach at the Emirates in, let’s face it, what will be an almost impossible job for the next incumbent.

And £45m-rated Nainggolan, who according to The Sun is now at the top of Arsenal’s wishlist for whoever is the next gaffer at the Gunners, would be an excellent addition in midfield where the Gunners need to up the quality.

Aaron Ramsey does his best and in fact has had his best goal return to game ratio this season but always seems to benefit from having someone alongside him to do some of the legwork.

Jack Wilshere is working his way back to his best after years in the wilderness but is still some way shy of being the player he was touted as, while Granit Xhaka and Mohamed Elneny haven’t lived up to expectations.

With investment being poured heavily into the attacking players this season, Arsenal now need to do the same in midfield or all those attacking riches will count for nothing.

Box-to-box midfielder Nainggolan could be that man. With his calves so big he has to cut holes in the back of his socks, the Belgian is quick, hard-working, strong and versatile. He can pass too, and is known for directing play from deep.

He can also get forward and has an eye for goal from midfield, especially from distance, as Wales will know well from his thunderbolt in the Euro 2016 quarter-finals.

He has bundles of energy which is exactly what this Arsenal team needs an injection of in the middle of the park. Dare I say it, in many of his strengths he bears a resemblance to Patrick Vieira, who may or may not be his new manager at the Emirates next season depending on who you believe.

Whoever is Arsenal boss next season needs to take a serious look at Nainggolan if they want to turn Wenger’s perennial underachievers into serious title challengers.
