Narcis Pelach was left mulling over missed opportunities for Stoke City to snatch an all-important first-half goal before they were undone by promotion-chasing Burnley in the second.

Pelach was pleased with Stoke’s first-half performance after changing formation and to a more pragmatic, direct style against a team that has only let in six goals in 18 games. There were gilt-edged chances for Million Manhoef, Tom Cannon and Bae Junho.

But Stoke couldn’t force that opener and, when they were then undone early after the break by a close range finish from Jay Rodriguez, they didn’t have enough in the locker to threaten coming back into game. Burnley then secured three points with a Josh Brownhill penalty.

Pelach said: "I'm pleased with the first half. I think we put them under pressure. We adapted our game a little bit today, we changed formation, we were more pragmatic in order to try to get a goal in the first half. We knew that was going to be really difficult because they don't concede and are really solid.

"I think we did enough to score. Junho chance, Milly chance, Cannon chance which usually he scores. Junho had that shot cleared off the line. We did enough to score and we built pressure with long throws, corners and free-kicks.

"The last 10 minutes of the first half were good and we got a little bit of momentum but of course when they score in the second half it goes down a little bit because it's more difficult. We did changes, we changed formation again to try to be more aggressive. Of course it's then more difficult to press but we were brave enough to do it.

"Then it's a pity because with the second goal, the penalty, the game is gone. They have quality, a lot of talent in their squad, and with their changes maybe the talent doesn't increase but it stays there. It's difficult to win the ball back against these types of players.

"I'm pleased with the effort and body language of the players. They tried and gave it all, which is important."
