NBA betting: Denver Nuggets title odds take big tumble after Jamal Murray injury
The Denver Nuggets’ worst fears were realized Tuesday when an MRI confirmed that guard Jamal Murray has a torn ACL and will be out indefinitely.
Murray injured his left knee late in Monday night’s loss to the Golden State Warriors. In the game’s final minute, Murray drove the lane and looked to elevate toward the basket. Instead, he went down after trying to push off with his left leg. He immediately grabbed his knee and was in obvious pain.
Murray, 24, is averaging 21.4 points per game while teaming up with MVP candidate Nikola Jokic in Denver. Prior to dropping their last two, the Nuggets had won eight consecutive games and moved up to fourth place in the Western Conference standings.
Murray had an incredible run in last year’s postseason, helping the Nuggets advance to the conference finals. With the way they had been playing recently, the Nuggets (34-20) became a trendy NBA Finals bet. But Murray’s injury will change things in a big way.
Entering Monday night’s game, the Nuggets had +1600 odds at BetMGM to win the NBA title. After Murray’s injury, those odds plummeted to +3000. Additionally, the Nuggets are now +1200 to come out of the West, behind the Los Angeles Lakers (+150), Los Angeles Clippers (+280), Utah Jazz (+350) and Phoenix Suns (+900).
Of all the NBA championship futures bets received by BetMGM, Denver had 14.5% of the tickets and 11.7% of the money. Those figures trailed only the Brooklyn Nets (20.2% of bets, 31.3% of money) and the Lakers (17% of bets, 20.9% of money). But because the Nuggets had longer odds, they are the biggest liability for the sportsbook at BetMGM.
